On his first album, Face Value, people had no problem accepting Phil as lead drummer on the still heard-everyplace song that defines anticipation: In The Air Tonight, 94 3/5 beats per minute. Here was a new sound, a stripped down American sound featuring a horn section borrowed from Earth, Wind and Fire.
This song isn’t one of the highest selling in Phil’s catalogue, but it was the song that changed everything: either people were going to accept Phil Collins playing shorter,simpler, more rhythmically American, in particular Motown Records as well as Otis Redding, Rufus Thomas, Bill Withers and the Stax and southern Motown groove type songs.
