The How Fast Was That And Why Should I Care Series – Kate Bush, “Wuthering Heights” | matherton diagram | median expected probable tempo=940.4 msecs

which shoes fit exactly. Which eyeglasses correct perfectly? That is a personal question for *you*.

If you are like me, or my friend Nick Avenscion of Los Angeles, a slow song in the middle of a playlist is as individual as taste in music itself.

Kate Bush’s Wuthering Heights is a song that is a personal favorite of mine, and calms me through the hard part of a simple treadmill walk – around minute 21 through 25. To me, the slow song as a Wuthering Heights illustrates how we can choose our own favorites, just like we can dress ourselves, and know what we like to eat for supper.

America’s HORSE WITH NO NAME is a song at a speed that one generally associated with victory, redemption and pure joy.  They did a twist in that speed – they play in the sublime sad haunted key of Em 9.

America’s HORSE WITH NO NAME is a song at a speed that one generally associated with victory, redemption and pure joy.  They did a twist in that speed – they play in the sublime sad haunted key of Em 9.  I recently heard the sing in the movie AMERICAN HUSTLER with Tom Cruise and Jennifer Lawrence and was psyched to hear the 10970s folk song sounding as unique as ever,

the zone | America |”Today’s The Day” |UNCLASSIFIED tempo map

I had liked the song and heard it before – to the point that when I went to breakfast I could feel the song more than the fear or anything else. And I was in what we all now call “THE ZONE.

The song Today’s The Day is my secret song in regard to the entire reason I discovered what I did.

The summer this song was popular, I was at a summer “sleep away” camp, and unlike when I was 9 years old and had gone to a sleep-away camp where 4 of my cousins were also going, two of them familiar with the ropes.

When I was ten I spent the summer at a summer camp in Connecticut in an atmosphere with which I was unfamiliar. Most other campers were from New England private schools, where I am from, like my wife and my parents , from New Jersey public school.

The camp and being homesick made me uncomfortable more than I ever would have admitted at a *tough* ten year old (!) would ever admit. The truth was I was uncomfortable meeting a couple of hundred new kids, no one close to me.

One day my fear ended. It happened because this song was playing on my clock radio alarm as I woke up. I had liked the song and heard it before – to the point that when I went to breakfast I could feel the song more than the fear or anything else. And I was in what we all now call “THE ZONE.” The day was perfect, I never hesitated, I tried to get nervous and I couldn’t, I just couldn’t miss. I remember telling myself: but for the song in morning, the whole summer would have been different. If I get older and no one has figured out how to use the power of matching an individual’s “zone” with a song that fit in that zone, I would need to try to do something myself.

INDIGO GIRLS UNCLASSIFIED TEMPO CHART – “I Call On The Resting Soul, Of Galileo, King of Night Vision, King Of Insight”

IN the late 20th century the band called the Indigo Girls wrote a brilliantly fun song about the most horribly brutal situation: Galileo, who’s “head was on the block/His crime?/Was giving up the truth.”

Matherton and me are listening to this as I type. I’m thinking : 25 year old song, better than ever.  Jackie is pushing for a comparison to a live version, both to compare speed and because it’s such a darned good piece of music!

©Newman Tempo Scale By Me, July 1988, copyright Nov 16, 1992. I think it holds up as well now as when I saw it 30 years ago. I did not INVENT it – there is nothing *to be* invented!  Below is a pattern of nature I saw while living as as first year law student. As I’ve written, I was trying to get gigs playing at piano bars during my time in Manhattan and despite on one night playing without mistakes by notes, on some difficult pieces, the feel in the room was unenergized and I did not know why. One night at after a 3rd ave gig, Bruce B, a drummer from the east coast said to  me, “not bad dude. you almost were good with Farmer’s Trust at the end, but I think that’s because it’s a waltz and it didn’t give you time to go into your your own head making up your you  own speed. I don’t know what it is with you piano players you think you can play any speed.  From a drummer’s perspective, I listen to your playing. You seem like other piano players to get off on all the harmonics underneath the piano, this *huge slab of wood*, blurring the harmonics as there are three strings for every note.  That makes anything you play sound interesting harmonically with all the notes playing off each other each other. YOU, dude!  That is not what the audience are hearing though, man. In fact, the *first time* you miss a beat as in instead playing in time, you go into your own and rubato which nobody’s going to follow.” This is getting along the this will be part 1 of genesis of the Newman Tempo Universal Proposed Scale. I’d like to end this part of the the by saying how much I try to convince myself that Bruce was wrong and in and I went into a 6moth-8 month period complete denial about what quite simply came playing for twenty two-year that I could be on time without out a metronome to practice with.
